Lies, damned lies and statistics | ||

If you consider the local populations of the other teams listed then Bees and Waterloo are clearly lagging.
Waterloo can be explained by the proximity of premiership football clubs, ie man utd, liverpool, everton, bolton, blackburn etc as well as it being in a rugby league/union split area. They're also a good distance from the South so imagine attract less travelling fans... What's Bees excuse? |
|||
Unregistered(d) |
Obviously not a local | ||
|
Not that any 'excuse' is needed (Bees' crowds are a matter for the club and the club alone): Birmingham, Aston Villa, West Bromwich, Wolverhampton, etc football clubs and Worcester, Coventry, Moseley, Stourbridge, Nuneaton etc rugby clubs ...

My previous posting is merely an illustration that the region is full of competing attractions along similar lines to Rich's.

So, what are Rich's competing attractions? Having never met the guy, you have the advantage over me.

Chortle! You've obviously got as much work to do as me. On that matter, I must have a work break.

2nd City | ||

Dress it up how you like, but we have heard in the past that Birmingham is the "second city". If so those attendance figures are pitiful by any standard.

2nd city | ||

The problem for Bees in thi regard is that although the name of the club contains the word Birmingham there is no real assosciation with the city. Birmingham RFC's old ground Portway is sited in worcestershire on the far side of the M42 and since the merger Bees hasve been in reality a Solihull club. Moseley have the only real claim to being "Birmingham's rugby club" and while attendances at Billesley are hardly breath-taking, given what the club has been through in the last few seaons they are hardly apppaling.

I always understood that Portway is under Stratford District Council and is therefore part of Warwickshire,although to be fair the border is very mixed up.

Oh Dear | ||
|
Some confusion.
Why are Birmingham & Solihull called as they are? Nothing sinister, just an amalgamation a few years ago of two rugby clubs called Birmingham RFC and Solihull RFC. We dont pretend to play next to the Bull Ring! By the way Moseley don't actually play in Moseley but it would be absurd to suggest that they change their name. They can't call themselves Birmingham because they tried with the RFU 5 years ago and were refused; why because Birmingham RFC exists within B & S. Since the revolution, through sheer hard work and an ambition, B & S accelerated through the Leagues to arrive where they are today. Of course our illustrious neighbours Mose and Coventry, ( I am not being sarcastic) IMHO were the two best clubs in England for a long while, who inspired many to take up or continue playing the game. The fact that we play and compete today is a testament to the way the game in England became professional and I accept it is a hard learning curve. Who are Pertemps Bees? Just the 1st XV, sponsored nicely not by some anonymous businessman (maybe nothing wrong with that either), but by an active member and former player of Solihull RFC. Who are B & S? A family club who along with many of us run Minis, Colts etc etc. Indeed good luck on saturday to Solihull RFC, the premier amateur team of the club who play Malvern in the North Midlands Cup at Stourbridge RFC ( another fine club) on saturday. It should be a worry to all in the general West Midlands area how to attract people to watch what I believe is good quality Rugby. But we have all created a monster signing and paying players and before anybody starts getting pious about encouraging home grown players get real as we all welcome tie ups with other clubs to ensure survival. The only point I make is that I think the Bees are where they are on merit. I agree it is sad that the wider audience is not enamoured but how do you change that? To an extent we all suffer from it. However do we then join the selfish people in the GP who believe in pulling up the drawbridge and destroying the idea of a meritorcracy? This is the attitude that Worcester contended with but we should all be glad they thrive today. Anyhow I for once have the upper hand as on saturday I have the priviledge to referee in Switzerlad the 3rd Division game between La Chaux-de Fonds V Wurenlos. La Chaux only get a Man and a dog to see them but they sit proudly at the top of the league and hope to kick on again next year. Nothing wrong with ambition or hope. So we get used to all the jibes but will continue to welcome rugby brethren from all parts. And we scored a lot of tries this season......... |

Portway - where? | ||
|
A quick check on Streetmap.co.uk reveals that while Portway village is in Worcestershire, the county boundary runs along the eastern side of the A435. The rugby ground is therefore in Warwickshire, in the district of Stratford-upon-Avon. Not that that matters overmuch. Incidentally, while Moseley no longer actually play in Moseley village, Billesley Common is less than 1/4 mile from the edge of what is considered to be Moseley, and it also, like the village, has a B13 postcode!

Birmingham & Solihull | ||

My comments above were not intended to be offensive in any way to the club, I admire what they have achieved over the years and Exeter have had some very good encounters with them.
I accept all that has been stated above about the clubs location outside of the city centre, but I maintain that the support is pitiful. My understanding is that Solihull is a relatively affluent area, so, in a traditional sense, should be a good area for Rugby Union. Maybe it's just your marketing men that need a kick up the arris? Before anyone bites back and despite a huge increase in Exeters' attendance this season, I don't think our club is any better than mediocre at publicising what we have to offer. |

Intelligent Bee | ||
|
I did enjoy reading your argument Cratch - you sounded quite balanced & intelligent but then thought no, he can't be that sensible, he supports Beees!!
I did hear a rumour that Maggs was signing for you, thought he was signing to Bristol. Could do with him at Mose. Anyway at least we have now establised that Birmingham & Solihull are in Warwickshire and so Moseley can say with hands on heart and without provocation that they are the best rugby club in Birmingham. |

Not parochial(?) | ||

And given the Bees currently play in Solihull we can honestly say we are the best team in the (former) county of W Mids!
Looking forward to visiting Biliously Common tomorrow to cheer on the N Mids (or -as it so often sounds like- the 'Mints'). |
